40 gauge (small): best for details, felting small items, and minimizes larger felting holes. Also good for defining outlines or attaching 3D work together.
38 gauge (medium): can be used for some detail work and large pieces. A good starter size.
36 gauge (large): good for covering large areas or creating bigger pieces with not a lot of details.
